Honestly What Do Republicans Think of Obama? February 14, 2009

So on this day, Valentine’s Day, I thought it appropriate to hear the voice of “Love” and Bipartisanship with Republicans …. or Not. I believe this open letter from Frank Schaffer to President Obama (don’t you just love saying that), whose father Francis was influential in the rise of the Religious Right and also as a former Republican himself tells the honest truth of what they really do think. And they’re pissed. You can hear it in the voice of Sean Hannity every day calling us Obamaniacs and calling him the messiah through his seething lips.
Dear President Obama: I know that from time to time you read Huffington Post because you’ve written for it. As a Huffington Post reader you’ll know that no one on this web site has more faithfully supported your candidacy and now your presidency than me. As a former lifelong Republican, son of a co-founder of the Religious Right; my late evangelical leader father, Francis Schaeffer, I’m in a unique position to tell you a few things about the Republicans from inside perspective. (As you know I left that movement in the mid 1980s.)
The lack of cooperation you’re getting from the Republican Party will continue. You were right to indulge in a little bit of tokenism when you had to Pastor Rick Warren pray at your inauguration. But if you think that the Republicans in Congress and the Senate are going to do more than their utmost to obstruct everything you are and what you stand for you’re dreaming.
As someone who appeared numerous times on the 700 Club with Pat Robertson, as someone for whom Jerry Falwell used to send his private jet to bring me to speak at his college, as an author who had James Dobson giveaway 150,000 copies of my one of my fundamentalist “books” allow me to explain something: the Republican Party is controlled by two ideological groups. First, is the Religious Right. Second, are the neoconservatives. Both groups share one thing in common: they are driven by fear and paranoia. Between them there is no Republican “center” for you to appeal to, just two versions of hate-filled extremes.
The Religious Right supply the kind of people who at McCain and Palin rallies were yelling things such as “kill him” about you. That’s the constituency to which your hand was extended when looking for compromise on your financial bailout bill.
There’s only one thing that makes sense for you now. Mr. President, you need to forget a bipartisan approach and get on with the business of governing by winning each battle. You will never be able to work with the Republicans because they hate you. Believe me, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are the norm not the exception. James Dobson and the rest are praying for you to fail. The neoconservatives are gnashing their teeth and waiting for you to “sell out Israel” or “show weakness” in Afghanistan, whatever, so they can declare you a traitor.
The problem is that when you deal with the Republican Party you’re talking to the polished characters in Washington. I wish you could see the hate e-mail’s that I have received over the last two years because I supported you, letters calling for God to kill me, telling me that I hate God because I supported you and that I am “an abortionist” and worse a “fag lover” because I’ve written that I believe that you will be a great president.
What those senators and congressmen are telling you is not what their rabid core constituents are telling them. Their loyalty is to a fundamentalist Christian ideology on the one hand and American exceptionalism of perpetual warfare and hatred and fear of the “other” on the other hand. Between the neoconservatives and evangelical Religious Right Republicans you have no friends.
The good news is that most Americans support you. And if you will just get in the face of the Republican Party and call their bluff you’ll be surprised how many individual ordinary Republicans will support you, not to mention the rest of us. America is sick of the Republicans.
The Democratic Party won for a reason: the Republicans failed and have taken us all down with them! You’re doing your presidency and America no favor by extending an open hand to the perpetually knotted fist of what has become the embittered lunatic fringe of our country. They would rather go down in flames than “compromise” their ideology.
As you showed us again at your press conference of Feb 9, you are a brilliant, articulate and decent man. Your Republican opponents are not decent people but ideologues bent on destroying you. To quote the biblical adage sir, don’t cast your pearls before swine.
Frank Schaeffer is the author of CRAZY FOR GOD-How I Grew Up As One Of The Elect, Helped Found The Religious Right, And Lived To Take All (Or Almost All) Of It Back. Now in paperback.
The Case for Traditional Marriage December 17, 2008

We hear it all the time, Religious Right and the GOP calling for “One Man, One Woman” all the while disallowing Gays and Lesbians the right to marriage. And when their arguments fail, and they always do, they turn to the Bible and say “Well…the Bible says…” But what does the Bible Say? According to a recent Newsweek article, “traditional marriage” has changed through the centuries and in “biblical times” it was all about property and many wives – so where’s the push for polygamy?
In the article, Lisa Miller points out, “In the Old Testament, the concept of family is fundamental, but examples of what social conservatives would call “the traditional family” are scarcely to be found..[A]s the Barnard University Bible scholar Alan Segal puts it, the arrangement was between “one man and as many women as he could pay for.”
Then she looks at what is actually said about marriage. Jesus had no interest in it, and told his followers that he wanted people to leave their families and follow him full time. Paul had no interest in marriage, unless carnal desires became so unbearable that it was unavoidable. Neither ever said anything about “defining” marriage.
Of course, this article has the fundamentalist Religious Right up in arms! They have declared war on Newsweek, urging their members across the country to bury Newsweek in emails and letters of protest in order to get a retraction. Newsweek in response has posted a reaction to the article on Gay Marriage.
My reaction, history will prove as in all cases, the Religious Right and GOP will be on the wrong side of history. Marriage Equality WILL happen and that is something we can all be sure of.
For those who want to turn to the Bible to try and define marriage. Here’s food for thought:
A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)
B. Marriage shall not impede a man’s right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)
C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)
D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)
E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)
F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother’s widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)
G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)
The GOP – Party of Anti-Intellectuals November 23, 2008

I do have to agree with The Economist…
The Republicans lost the battle of ideas even more comprehensively than they lost the battle for educated votes, marching into the election armed with nothing more than slogans…
Republicanism’s anti-intellectual turn is devastating for its future. The party’s electoral success from 1980 onwards was driven by its ability to link brains with brawn. The conservative intelligentsia not only helped to craft a message that resonated with working-class Democrats, a message that emphasised entrepreneurialism, law and order, and American pride. It also provided the party with a sweeping policy agenda. The party’s loss of brains leaves it rudderless, without a compelling agenda.
Remember this is the party that hailed intellectuals as “Elitists”… Therefore, John McCain did best among uneducated voters in Appalachia and the South.
Why is this happening? One reason is that conservative brawn has lost patience with brains of all kinds, conservative or liberal. Many conservatives—particularly lower-income ones—are consumed with elemental fury about everything from immigration to liberal do-gooders. They take their opinions from talk-radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and the deeply unsubtle Sean Hannity. And they regard Mrs Palin’s apparent ignorance not as a problem but as a badge of honour.
All it takes is one trip into the heart of Pennsyltucky to find this out.

The Truth About ACORN October 29, 2008

The attack on ACORN (The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) is shaping up to be the most vicious of the 2008 election. The problem is, we will have to suffer the consequences long after the election is over. This video about ACORN debunks the outrageous lies:
ACORN is accustomed to opposition. They’ve been educating, organizing, and empowering low-income communities for nearly 40 years. When you advocate with and for poor people against policies and practices that discriminate and keep communities from thriving, you make some enemies. But they’ve never seen anything like this.
When John McCain’s presidential campaign began sinking in the polls, they looked for a scapegoat. They picked ACORN. And now, in the past few weeks alone, ACORN staffers have received death threats in Ohio and Rhode Island, and offices have been vandalized in Washington and Massachusetts. Numerous threatening and racist phone calls have been made to ACORN offices across the country.
And then there’s FOX news, accusing ACORN of all kinds of criminal activity hundreds – HUNDREDS – of times during the past few days. You know what FOX news isn’t reporting? This: Just two years ago, John McCain himself stood in solidarity with ACORN, saying of our members, “they are what makes America special.”
McCain’s attacks have to stop. They are wrong, and the results for hundreds of thousands of people with whom we work will be disastrous.

Although a comedy show, John Stewart of The Daily Show has a point that goes beyond the majority of mainstream reporting.

Check out the “Real Americans” in Wasilla, Alaska. According to Palin, these are the “Real Pro-Americans”, not those commies in cities like New York (you know, the one that used to have the twin towers).

And finally, take the “Real American” test yourself. Are you part of the “Real America” or “Real Virginia”?

McCain and Palin: Politics of Hate October 7, 2008
Posted by youns in Uncategorized.add a comment
Let’s call it for what it is, “Hate Mongering” and Enticement to Violence. These are the Supporters of McCain and Palin. They have the audacity to call anyone “Terriorists” when they themselves are promoting the hate. It is vastly coming to reality to all, that they are bigots and racists let alone liars. It’s a disgrace and shows what Nazi’s McSame and Failin Palin have become. These people aren’t Christians by inciting Murder.
In Palin’s speaches she is inciting hate and whipping her racist supporters to a frenzy. In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed “treason!” during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing U.S. troops.
In every case, McCain and Palin ignored the hate that they were whipping up and therefore promoting the mob to further actions. When will they be satisfied – when someone has been murdered? That’s their brand of Christianity – more like the anti-christ then Christ.
The Truth Behind Barack Obama and William Ayers October 7, 2008

Right-wing smear groups along with Palin and McCain have tried using guilt-by-association to connect Barack Obama to Professor William Ayers. For those not familiar, William Ayers was a Vietnam War anti-war activist who advocated violence to stop America’s involvment in the Vietnam War. He’s much like John Brown during the Slavery Movement. Would we label John Brown a terriorist or did he fight for the right and justice on behalf of slaves?
Smears about Obama often spread as part of a broader, shadowy strategy to scare people who aren’t very familiar with Barack by spreading false information. It’s time to learn the truth instead of the lies spread by someone who advocates herself as a Christian.
Here’s the truth: the smear associating Barack to Ayers is “phony,” “tenuous,“ – even “exaggerated at best if not outright false.” Ayers and Barack barely know each other. They served together on the boards of local charities, but do not know each other well.
William Ayers is now a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Barack has publicly denounced the acts Ayers committed in the 1960’s (when Barack was only 8 years old). As reported in The New York Times, the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.”
You can get more details and help spread the truth about these shameful attacks:

Together we can make sure these negative and divisive attacks don’t affect this election.
If it’s going to be guilt by association, then let’s talk about Palin and her Witchdoctor Pastor!
Sarah Palin Can’t Name a Newspaper She Reads October 1, 2008

COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this — to stay informed and to understand the world?
PALIN: I’ve read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media —
COURIC: But what ones specifically? I’m curious.
PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years.
COURIC: Can you name any of them?
PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news.
Sarah, how do you spell your name?
Oh, you know… pretty much the way you would. It’s a very common name, you know, not — I mean a lot of people have heard one like it. I spell it the same way I always, the way my mother taught me, just like you and everybody else. There’s this, you know, crazy perception that we, Alaska, you know we spell just like everyone does. It’s not this strange foreign country unlike Washington. But, you know, like, I, you know, I get it–this gotcha journalism we all have to deal with these days. Plus, you know I can see that Russian guy in the morning from where I live. Nkay?
